"We cannot escape the fact that we are made in such a way that at every step life is a constant choice. What we do need to do is select what we feel to be right and know that the universe will never deny us anything. We choose and mind creates. We should endeavor to chose that which will express always a greater life and we must remember that the spirit is always seeking to express love and beauty through us." Ernest Holmes, Creative Mind and Success
There are times when we are faced with a decision that we know will change the course of our lives and feel that we must choose but aren't sure how to make a right choice. Some of us never quite decide and end up just "rolling with the punches". Choosing seems like a burden or a curse. But this is not true, we always have the power to choose. Even in "rolling with the punches", choice is our power, a superpower. We can choose how to think about a situation. We can choose how to react to our circumstances, and even if options seem limited, we can choose what our next steps will be.
How is choice a superpower, you might ask? Well, every choice we make will have an outcome. It is the universal law of cause and effect. If we can choose a cause, we can have some idea and influence of what the effect might be. The first thing to do, then, is choose wisely! If effects follow causes then we must be sure that we make a choice that will have the most desirable outcome rather than say, the most immediately gratifying one. So, though it might feel right to choose to respond to an insult with another insult or respond to that person cutting you off in traffic by yelling expletives at them, or respond to a break up by binge eating sixteen tubs of ice cream, the effects of those choices might not be so great in the long run.
Making choices concerning undesirable situations is usually a lot more complicated and important than choosing something sweet like, which tub of ice cream to eat. But it's not impossible to do. For example, maybe you just lost your car, your job, your spouse and it seems as though you are losing everything! You could choose Option A and view this as proof that your life is falling apart because you are undeserving or incapable of having a good life or Option B; you could choose to view this as an opportunity to start fresh. Both things are equally "true" and valid outlooks, but choosing one outlook over the other will affect the choices you make and the opportunities you take, therefore affecting your outcomes.
It's all about feeling and potential. Sit with Option A for a moment. How does that thought of being undeserving of a good things make you feel in your body? Pretty shitty ,huh? Now sit with Option B. How does that thought make you feel? It gives you a sense of expansion, possibility. See, the choices we make, even in the most undesirable of situations, have the ability to determine what will happen next. A person choosing Option A, no matter how realistic and logical it may seem is setting themselves up to be closed off to new opportunities. A person choosing Option B has opened new doors for themselves.
To take this further, let us differentiate between expansive choices and limiting choices. Always aim to make choices that will expand your opportunity or sense of possibility. If you have to decide how to get an urgent amount of money you could choose to rob a bank, but might end up in jail or worse. You could also choose to crowd source, borrow, ask for an extension, etc. all choices have their outcomes. The way to choose is -- what will allow me to expand my realm of possibility? You can also start at the conclusion by asking what would I like the outcome of this situation to be, if i could have it be anything, and then reverse engineer from that place and make your choice.
It may be hard for you to believe that you can turn an undesirable situation into a chance for a better life, especially if, so far, your life has been full of undesirable situations. But the thing about choice is that it is is a recurring factor of life. All day, everyday we make choices. Taking control of your life is taking control of the choices you must make. To choose wisely and thoughtfully is to create a happier more expansive life. If you want to experience different outcomes, determine to begin making different choices. Choice truly is a great power, a superpower. And you know what they say about great power.
