Many people are curious about meditation but aren't quite sure where to start. There are so many different varieties of meditation; Vipassana, Mindfulness, Transcendental, guided mediation.
Choosing a particular system or style can be overwhelming. But the good thing about mediation is that most of us have done it many times without even noticing.
The etymology of meditation is as follows: "contemplation; devout preoccupation; devotions, prayer," from Old French meditacion "thought, reflection, study," and directly from Latin meditationem (nominative meditatio) "a thinking over, meditation," "to meditate, think over, reflect, consider," "continuous calm thought upon some subject" The Latin verb also had stronger senses: "plan, devise, practice, rehearse, study."
So if you've ever contemplated a subject or idea for a long time, reflected on a memory from the past, or found yourself in deep thought on any particular subject, then you have in effect, practiced a form of meditation.
You can meditate to receive inspiration or to relax from a busy day.
When considering how to meditate first think about what you would like to achieve through your meditation; clarity, calm, contentedness, relaxation, clear mind, serenity.
You can then meditate on these feelings and ideas or you can simply clear your mind and focus on your breath. This is a simple and effective way to relax, reset, and calm our mind and body. We have an example in the video below.
You can meditate as often and for as long as you like. As a beginner it may be hard initially to sit for long periods of time. Don't stress yourself out about trying to relax. Start small, aim to sit for 5 or 10 minutes your first few times and then gradually increase your time period as you feel necessary.
