I grew up primarily in the Christian church bouncing between Southern Baptist, Methodist, First Church of Christ and so on. I felt that in my childhood I received so many mixed messages from the church. On the one hand they'd said "come as you are" and on the other there were so many sins outlined that it seemed that if I did actually come as I was I would surely be smited!
Eventually the ideas I had grown up with about God slowly began to dismantle. The idea that God was a big, jealous, old white man in the sky ready to bless or to smite at any moment wasn't too difficult to deprogram from my mind. But still, for the longest time, I held the belief that God was somewhere far off from me. Or, if S/He was "with me" S/He was somewhere out of reach in a forgotten part of my mind that I might never be able to access.
It wasn't until I began to read more New Thought authors that I was finally able to piece together the understanding of the infinitely present, infinitely intelligent, infinitely loving and powerful God Spirit that I knew was True all along. Writers such as Ernest Holmes, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, Emmet Fox, Thomas Troward to name a few, gave me permission to affirm what I had always felt to be true.
Not only did they give me permission, they gave me Reason. I mean, it makes perfect sense. If God created the world and "out of which was nothing made that it was made", then that would have to mean that God would have to be everywhere present all the time, no matter what. The creation is not separate from the creator. If God is life, then God is everywhere because life is everywhere. Presence is everywhere. Life is the blood that moves through my body, life is the ease and ability through which I can breathe, life is the sun and wind in the stress, the very atmosphere in which we live and see and have our being is Life, God, Self, All-Spirit.
Once I began to understand this I began to practice feeling the Presence of this Great God Spirit everywhere. It is a feeling of calm, loving protection, of safety, of being held, supported, provided for. Sometimes it is easier to tap into this feeling than others, but it is always possible. Meditating on the idea of infinitely present Knowledge, Intelligence, Creativity revealed to me that I can always know help or reach this intelligence without first having to go through any difficult process, repentance or flagellation.
So this is one method that I have used time and again by which I can gain insight, inspiration, to any problem or question.
First, meditate on the idea of infinite Presence of Source. Of the Source of all life and creation. What are the attributes of this source? Knowledge, Truth, Creativity, Intelligence, Love. Now understand that 'infinite' implies that there is nowhere that this Presence is not. Which means that right now. Right where you are, this presence IS. And in fact, You are a manifestation of this Spirit which operates through self knowing and makes out of itself all that was made.
Feel yourself to be One with this All-Knowing Spirit. Remember, this Spirit is always and only ever moving upon Itself--since It is All, you are included in that Self. Now understand that this Self is All Knowing.
Meditate on the idea of being in the presence of the All Knowing. Feel what that would feel like in your body. Now, bring whatever it is you seek to know to the front of your mind. Allow your question to dissolve into the All Knowingness that is this Great Spirit which you are.
And then let it Go. or, "Be still and know" Be still and know that your answers, help, insight will came to you at just the right time. Wait patiently with expectancy.
Now I have done this meditation dozens of times now. And I will say it gets easier each time, and the answers come quicker each time. So don't be surprised if you don't immediately gain clarity over your concern (and also don't be surprised if you do!) Just be open to the idea that inspiration, clarity, and guidance can and will come to you in any form at any time, in any place. This is because the Spirit is infinite in All things and able to move through All things. If you begin to feel that it might not come just revisit this page, reread the quote above, or try the meditation again. But never stress or strain over it because we are more susceptible to receiving guidance when we are in a relaxed state, this is what is meant by allowing.
"Undoubtedly we have no questions to ask which are unanswerable . We must trust the perfection of the creation so far, as to believe that whatever curiosity the order of things has awakened in our minds, the order of things can satisfy." Emerson, Nature
